As a whole, the quartet is an emotional response to the four seasons, inspired by impressions, feelings and memories from childhood.

'Summer', or "the end of innocence": the Summer is not
always a benign season - the sun's rays glare down
unrelentingly and contrast with the dark, sinister
world of the encroaching ivy and the stem's stranglehold
on the colombine, which is straining towards the light
and air.
